Supplements That Can Help Fight High Cholesterol
Want to find a supplement to help get your cholesterol under control? Before you head to the health food store, here is some information to help you make an informed choice.
Nicotinic acid, or niacin, has been used for years to help fight cholesterol. Niacin has been shown to lower the bad cholesterol, LDL, and raise levels of good cholesterol, or HDL. Niacin is the most recommended supplement to reduce cholesterol, but it should be taken under a physician’s care, due to possible side effects and drug interactions. The higher doses needed to have an effect can also cause flushing of the face, glucose intolerance, and in the worst cases, liver damage. There is a safer form of niacin available,
called inositol hexaniacinate.
Another cholesterol fighting supplement is called policosanol. It can be extracted from either sugar cane and beeswax, however, the higher potency form is derived from sugar cane. Policosanol has been shown to lower total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL), as well as increasing high density lipoprotein(HDL). Since it is free of side effects and can be used by diabetics, it is considered relatively save. Usually sold as
beeswax, yam or sugar cane wax, it may be more difficult to find than some of the other supplements, but definitely worth the effort.
A form of vitamin B5 called pantothenic acid. It has been proven to lower LDL levels and raise HDL levels, making the total cholesterol level improve dramatically. Additionally, this form of vitamin B5 is very effective at lowering the triglyceride levels in the blood.
The fatty acid found in fish, called Omega-3 can be found in fish oil capsules, olive oil and cod liver oil. Omega-3 can lower the triglycerides and inhibit the formation of plaque and clogs in the arteries. Additionally, olive oil is high in unsaturated fats and has been shown to help balance the level of cholesterol in the blood.
The FDA has approved the use of phytosterols, a compound found in plant based foods in their natural states for the reduction of cholesterol. All fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains contain some form of phytolsterol. There are three specific compounds, but a supplement is available as capsules. Increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as adding this supplement, should positively impact your cholesterol level.
Another ancient remedy is red yeast rice. This rice, discovered in ancient China, is a rice fermented in red yeast. It has been shown to normalize cholesterol levels.
This is a short primer in some natural supplements that can help you to lower your cholesterol levels. As you can see, there are a few natural ingredients that can help you to maintain normal cholesterol levels. Do your own research and educate yourself as to the benefits of some of these natural ingredients.
